Shillong, Sept 18: Two tourist taxis associations from Khasi Hills have threatened to hold a peace rally and hunger strike if the government fails to prevent tourist vehicles, registered outside Meghalaya, from ferrying passengers to tourist spots.
The All Khasi Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTA) and the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) held its general meeting at the Malki football ground here on Wednesday and decided to first write to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on their demand.
Briefing the media after the meeting, Joint Action Committee member of AKMTA and AKMTTA, Balajied Jyrwa, said if the Chief Minister does not respond to the letter of the association with its demand then the associations would hold a peace rally and hunger strike.

“The demand of the Associations is that all vehicles registered outside Meghalaya should stop only at ISBT, Shillong or any designated place identified by the state government. Local tourist vehicles should ferry tourists to around the tourist spots within the state,” Jyrwa demanded.
He said AKMTA and AKMTTA are working closely with the associations of Assam and claimed the tourist taxi associations “understand the demands” of the associations from Meghalaya on their genuine demand.
