James Gunn Explains Starting the Superman Trailer With a Broken Man of Steel
James Gunn’s Superman may well be one of the most anticipated comic book flicks in recent memory, and in large part, that is due to the aesthetic and story that it embraces. The recently released teaser trailer showcases this wonderfully, from Supe’s costume –which includes the iconic red briefs–, to Krypto’s first live-action appearance.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gunn broke down the trailer, explaining what sets this iteration of Superman apart. The trailer opens on a defeated Superman in an icy wasteland, bleeding, only able to muster a weak whistle –which beckons Krypto. “This movie, at the end of the day, is not about power,” Gunn says. “This movie is about, in the loose sense of the word, a human being struggling with his day-to-day life. And we see a different aspect of him at the beginning. I thought it was a cool place to start the trailer—and the movie, frankly.”

‘You’re Going to Want to See Him Go On’: Kraven the Hunter Star Speaks on Character’s Future
Aaron Taylor-Johnson believes fans will want to see more of Kraven after this film.
As far as the four-legged Kryptonian’s first appearance goes, it showed him as Superman’s best friend. However, there is more to the story, as Gunn said, “His relationship with Krypto is…complicated. He’s not nearly the best dog. There’s a lot more to Krypto than you see in this trailer.” Gunn also addressed the other ways in which he is “embracing all of the Superman mythology.”
His relationship with Krypto is…complicated.
“There’s a way that superhero movies have taken these characters and said, ‘Okay, yeah, it’s Batman, but it’s not any of the other stuff …’ Or ‘It’s Superman, but it’s not any of the other stuff,'” Gunn said. “But in our [film], he lives in a world with superheroes. He has friends who are other superheroes. He has people he doesn’t get along with who are other superheroes.”

David Corenswet Influenced Superman Keeping His Red Trunks
Gunn also revealed that actor David Corenswet was a huge influence to the development of the character and the costume.
“We were standing in the room with me and you and Judianna [Makovsky], our costume designer, who I’ve worked with going back to Guardians 2, and it was freaking colorful,” he continued. “I was like, ‘Ugh, I don’t know.’ And David goes, ‘Yeah—he’s an alien from outer space who’s super powerful, who doesn’t want children to be afraid of him.’ And it touched me in the moment. That is who he is, and that’s where the costume comes from.… He’s got red beams that come out of his eyes. He can blow over things with his breath. He wants to not be scary to children.”
