Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, from Kuwait’s royal Al-Sabah family, or the House of Sabah, is several times richer than any Indian billionaire, including Mukesh Ambani, and Gautam Adani.

While many are awestruck with vast wealth possessed by Indian business tycoons like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, there still exist royals in today’s modern whose riches rival those of erstwhile kings and emperors. One such person whose gargantuan wealth would leave you dumbfounded is Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, the 84-year-old Emir of Kuwait who ascended the throne last year after the passing of the kingdom’s previous monarch, his half-brother, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, in December last year.

According to various reports, the Al-Sabah royal family, which has ruled Kuwait since 1750 AD, has a net worth of over $360-400 billion. A major portion of the Kuwaiti royal family’s wealth is invested in European and American stock markets, and its believed that they quadrupled their riches by investing in real estate, telecom sector and other major companies across the world.

The Al-Sabah family also has investments ranging from ports, airports to power discoms (electricity distribution companies), and runs an investment firm called Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA), which has investments in major companies like BlackRock, Associated British Ports (UK), Citigroup and Merrill Lynch.

However, the single largest source of the Al-Sabah family’s enormous wealth are Kuwait’s vast oil and natural gas reserves, which are the sixth largest in the world. The kingdom exports this precious natural resource to almost half of the world. According to a report by Kuwaiti news website Al-Seyasa, the first ruler of the Al-Sabah family took over the reins of Kuwait’s throne in 1756.

The current monarch, Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, who was born on September 27, 1940, has two wives — Nuria Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah and Munira Badah Al-Mutairi — and has fathered 12 children — 5 sons and 7 daughters– from his two marriages.

The Al-Sabah family, also known as the House of Sabah, owns an expansive fleet of luxury vintage cars, including some which are over 100-125 years old. The House of Sabah owns almost every vintage luxury car there is, including the 1904 and 1924 Minerva, Aston Martins from the original James Bond films, custom Porsche 911 Turbo S, Ferrari, Rolls Royce and Porsche.

Kuwait’s new Emir, Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, was the oldest Crown Prince in the world before his coronation in 2023. Sheikh Mishal, the de facto ruler of the oil-rich Gulf nation, has cordial ties with India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
