Grenada: New initiative tackles period poverty among youth

A collaborative project aimed at supporting menstrual health among vulnerable young women in Grenada has successfully concluded, organizers announced this week

The initiative, “Empowering Girls in Grenada to Navigate Their Periods with Dignity,” targeted students at the Programme for Adolescent Mothers (PAM) and Grand Anse School for Social Development.

Spearheaded by Soroptimist International Grenada, the project partnered with the Ministry of Community and Social Development, Housing and Gender Affairs, alongside Cuso International.

Participants received Dignity Packages containing essential hygiene products including sanitary pads, wipes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, body lotion, soap, and deodorant. These supplies were distributed to help young women maintain proper hygiene and focus on their education without concerns about menstrual care.

“This initiative wasn’t just about providing products, it was about ensuring these girls understand that they are equal and capable of achieving their dreams regardless of the challenges they faced,” Women’s Rights Advocate Elaine Henry-McQueen told reporters.

The program has received positive feedback from recipients, with many expressing appreciation for resources that will help them manage their periods with greater confidence.

Project organizers say they remain committed to advocating for girls’ health and wellbeing in Grenada, with plans to develop future initiatives supporting young women in the community.
