Qatar has successfully secured membership in ‘WTO Chairs Programme’, despite fierce competition from over 100 academic institutions representing member states.

The membership was secured through a collaborative project between the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Hamad Bin Khalifa University, supported by the Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation Council. The project was submitted by the Ministry through its office at World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva.

This landmark achievement falls in line with Qatar’s unwavering commitment to enhancing scientific research aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030. The Qatari project is designed to address industrial policy challenges related to digital development and includes in-depth research on digital transformation and sustainable practices.

Additionally, it delves into the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and the regulation of legitimate anonymous web browsing.

The WTO Chairs Programme is an initiative focused on enhancing educational curricula by fostering trade-related academic activities within universities and research institutions in developing and least-developed countries.

By providing educational support, the program fosters a better understanding of the global trade system and WTO-related issues among academics and policymakers. It also aims to strengthen research on trade-related matters and increase awareness about the significance of trade co-operation through disseminating information related to international trade.

Academic institutions that are selected for the WTO Chairs Programme receive four years of financial, academic, and technical support to develop specialized curricula, conduct research, and foster outreach activities. After completing this period, these institutions become integral to WTO Chairs Programme network, joining an esteemed global community of distinguished academic institutions.
