Son of Kerala head-load worker, waste collector is now a successful agricultural scientist

M Ajith, a 31-year-old from Kottayam, Kerala, has made remarkable strides in the field of agricultural science despite his humble beginnings. Raised by his father, Murukesan, who worked as a waste (‘aakri’) collector and head-load worker, Ajith’s family faced massive financial challenges. Their home was constructed with wooden planks, and their luxury was the clothes Ajith’s father bought from the roadside markets of Kottayam. It was through these hardships that Ajith learned the value of hard work and perseverance.

Ajith’s dedication paid off when he secured the second rank in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) exam, conducted by the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB). This achievement will earn him an appointment as a Scientist (B) at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), marking a major milestone in his career as an agricultural scientist.

In 2012, Ajith passed the entrance exam and joined Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth in Akola, Maharashtra, for a BSc in Agriculture, with the support of an ICAR scholarship. His younger brother, Arjun, also joined the family’s ‘aakri’ collection, helping him. Ajith continued his academic journey, earning his MSc from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in 2018 and completing his PhD in Agricultural Chemicals in 2023. Ajith’s wife is Sugandhi, an English Literature graduate.
