‘South Park’ Co-Creator Matt Stone Promises a New Movie Special, Episodes in 2025

South Park is set for a big comeback in 2025. Matt Stone, co-creator of the acclaimed adult animated series, confirmed a South Park movie special will arrive early this year via Paramount+ followed by new episodes on Comedy Central.

2024 saw Stone and co-creator Parker releasing an Ozempic-themed special in May, and that was it for South Park last year. It was just the second year without a new season of South Park since the long-running series’ premiered in 1997, as The Direct pointed out.

The slow-down in 2024 also prompted a cascade of searches for a 2025 South Park movie on the big screen. Now, it appears the beloved series will remain on the small screen this year, with a “movie special” and more new episodes.

Parker and Stone also have a live-action comedy film in the works. Back in November 2024, Stone spoke with Bloomberg about a project he and Parker are working on with hip-hop star Kendrick Lamar and associate Dave Free as a possible reason for the South Park hiatus.

“We are working on a movie. We are doing a movie with Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free and their company. And we are working on it, and it will hopefully come out July 4th weekend, opposite ‘Jurassic Park’ which is pretty funny.

“[Kendrick Lamar is] very involved. And Dave Free is very involved. Every day they are working on it. But that is what we are doing, and then we will do ‘South Park.’ Beginning of next year, we are coming back with one episode, and a bunch more in the second half of 2025. But we are working on something.”

While there has been speculation that South Park being largely absent in 2024 could signal a looming end to the beloved series, Stone dispelled those notions.

”We don’t have an end in sight. And actually, and I will say, honestly, it is because it is still such an awesome sandbox. You know, we are working on a movie right now, a live-action movie, and when we get back to ‘South Park,’ it is going to be like, ‘Oh, right, here we go.’ I cannot wait to hang out with those characters again, to be cheesy about it, but we love doing ‘South Park.’”

Always quick with a topical joke, Stone added, “I think we will last long enough to reach the singularity and pass it off to our AI.”

South Park Signed Some Serious Ink in 2021

There’s also the fact that Parker and Stone signed a massive deal with ViacomCBS in 2021, guaranteeing new South Park episodes on Comedy Central through 2027. The deal also includes 14 original movies which stream through Paramount+.

Why We Haven’t Gotten a Sequel to the 1999 South Park Film

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut was a critical and financial success 25 years ago, but a sequel has never come to fruition.

The upcoming 2025 movie special will count among the 14 in the contract, with seven released so far. Those titles include South Park: Post COVID (November 21, 2021), South Park: Post COVID – The Return of COVID (December 16, 2021), South Park: The Streaming Wars (June 1, 2022), South Park: The Streaming Wars Part 2 (July 13, 2022), South Park: Joining the Panderverse (October 27, 2023) South Park (Not Suitable for Children) (December 20, 2023), and South Park: The End of Obesity (May 24, 2024.)

With just half of the movie specials out, and Stone confirming new episodes on the way, the state of the South Park union seems strong.
