ROCHESTER — Rochester Lourdes dug a hole against a state-ranked opponent, and couldn’t find a way to dig completely out of it.
No. 17-ranked Luverne scored the first four goals of a non-conference boys hockey game at Graham Arena on Friday night, en route to a 6-3 victory against Lourdes.
Luverne led 1-0 after one period and 4-0 after two.
Lourdes began to respond in the third. Nolan Dubois scored the first of his two goals in the game 3:19 into the final period, but Luverne responded five minutes later to extend its lead to 5-1.
The Eagles got the next two goals, though, as Dubois scored again with 5:49 to play, then Jack Phillips added one 2:44 later, pulling the Eagles within 5-3.
That was it for their scoring, though, as Luverne goalie Gavin Hoven made 29 saves, and Maddux Domagala added an insurance goal with 1:03 to play.
Luverne, which entered the game averaging 6.8 goals per game, improves to 9-2-1 overall this season.
Lourdes (5-4-1 overall) plays again at 5 p.m. Saturday at La Crescent-Hokah.
