Transformers One is set to roll into theaters this coming weekend and is – to no one’s surprise – expected to knock Beetlejuice Beetlejuice out of the number one spot. The billion dollar franchise has long been a favorite of many since the first live-action film debuted in 2007, and it seems as if the pieces are finally in place to bring fans the anticipated crossover between their beloved alien robots and the elite special forces unit known as G.I. Joe.
The long-talked about film was teased at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts last year, and in a new interview with Collider, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed earlier reports that yes, Transformers and G.I. Joe will definitely be sharing the screen together in what will be the next live-action outing in both franchises. Of course, that’s all dependent on the success of Transformers One at the box office, but based on early projections and the animated feature receiving a lot of acclaim ahead of its release, that shouldn’t be a problem.
“Well, we’re going, again, subject to success, we’re going to do a sequel to this, and there will be an animated version, and it will exist completely separately to whatever we do live-action. The next live-action movie will be a crossover. Where it will be particularly affected is the fact that we now know what these robots are capable of emotionally in a way. So we’re going to have to figure out how to create that room, that we can afford that, and create a story that you can take more advantage of that.
“So one of the things that I’m particularly interested in doing, and we’re still in the development phase, so nothing is by any means written in stone, but I think we need to do more now from the robot point of view in the live-action because that’s the only way you’re really going to get inside them.”
How Transformers One Affects the G.I. Joe Crossover
One of the unique characteristics of Transformers One is that, unlike previous films in the franchise, there are no humans in the movie. As such, the Autobots and Decepticons have been given their own agency, filled with hopes and dreams that are theirs alone, and separate from those previously shared by their flesh and blood companions. By injecting more emotion into them, director Josh Cooley has presented Bonaventura with a distinct challenge going into the crossover with G.I. Joe, a film that will undoubtedly feature a number of characters.
It’s going to be a balancing act, Bonaventura says, because now that the Transformers have been front and center displaying their own emotions and individual traits, that’s something that’s going to have to be worked into future movies. Combine that aspect with the large cast, and there’s the potential for disaster, something that the producer desperately wants to avoid.
“Instead of them reacting to humans or reacting to the human plot, what is their drive, has to be part of that story now. So it’s going to be complicated because now the hardest thing about a lot of franchise movies is how many characters there are, and the more characters you try to manage, the harder it is to make a bunch of really good ones. You kind of got to keep going, keep it smaller, keep it smaller.
“So we’ll be in that process for a while where we’ll start with a bunch of Joes and a bunch of Transformers and I’ll say, regular humans, and then you’re going to do this. That’s kind of where we are right now, is trying to put the larger thing in place. The trick in this one, like we were talking about here, in trying to find that tone and balance is like, ‘Well, how much of the Joes do you want? And how much of the Transformers do you want?'”
It appears as if things are still in the early stages of development, but it’s nice to know that the crossover is at least on everyone’s radar. As to when it might debut? It’s too early to tell at this point, but seeing as how it has yet to begin production, the 2025/26 release window that Paramount was hoping for might be stretching things a little.
