Music sales reach record-breaking high in ‘stunning’ comeback

Back in 2001, artists including Dido, Shaggy and Kylie Minogue pushed music sales to new heights.

Tracks including Thank You, It Wasn’t Me and Can’t Get You Out Of My Head were among the biggest sellers of the year as consumer spend reached a peak of £2.2 billion.

However, a combination of illegal file-sharing and the emergence of streaming services such as Spotify signalled the end of the CD boom. Revenues plummeted to £1 billion by 2013.

Now, in what has been described as a “stunning comeback”, the industry has managed to surpass its previous peak.

Last year, spend grew by 7 per cent compared with 2023 to push UK recorded music revenues to an all-time record of almost £2.4 billion, according to data from
