Microsoft to Invest $3 Billion in India for AI and Cloud Growth
Microsoft plans to invest $3 billion in India in the cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and AI skilling over the next two years, the company’s CEO Satya Nadella annouced during his visit to the country. “Microsoft will also support the country’s long-term competitiveness by training 10 million people over the next five years with AI skills,” the company said in a press release announcing the development.
This is a part of the second edition of its ADVANTA(I)GE India program, the company had started this program back in 2024 with the goal of training 2 million people in the country in AI.

AI Innovation Network for India:
Besides the investments, Microsoft’s Research (MSR) Lab has also announced an AI Innovation Network in India. As a part of this network, MRS will build new collaborations with Indian businesses to “accelerate the transition from research to real usable business solutions.” The company is already working with Physics Wallah on math reasoning and other companies on topics such as causal inference, optimizing Indic LLMs, prompt optimization, and reinforcement learning.
MoU with SaaS Boomi:
Microsoft mentions that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the software as a service (SaaS) community Boomi. As a part of this collaboration, the two will seek to “upskill more than 150,000 startup employees through focused workshops, foster regional development in 20+ tier II cities, create over 200,000 new job opportunities, and help attract an additional US $1.5 billion in venture capital funding for the Indian AI and SaaS ecosystem.”
Microsoft’s Engagement with AI projects in India:
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has collaborated with AI projects in India. In February last year, the company began working with generative AI startup Sarvam AI to make its Indic voice large language model (LLM) available on Azure. It also worked with the Shiksha Foundation to create Shiksha Copilot to help teachers develop a complete lesson plan with engaging content quicker.

Besides this, the company also released a blueprint of AI governance in India back in 2023, which detailed how India should go about framing laws, policies, and regulations for ensuring accountability of AI systems framing laws, policies, and regulations for ensuring accountability of AI systems.
