Sebastian Stan Hypes the Practical Effects and Stuntwork in Thunderbolts* Movie
Following his Golden Globe Awards win this past Sunday, fans will see Sebastian Stan back in the role of Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in this summer’s Thunderbolts*. Stan recently teased that moviegoers can expect to see more practical effects and less CGI in the upcoming movie, a rarity for modern superhero blockbusters.
Speaking with Deadline, Stan promised that Thunderbolts* would be “its own thing,” explaining that he felt like fans won’t be able to “compare it to any previous Marvel movie, and that’s because of the group of characters in this film and these actors.” Like his co-star David Harbour shared before him, Stan had a great time filming Thunderbolts* and that was due to the chemistry the whole cast had with one another. “I couldn’t have had a better time than I did with David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus,” he stated. “I mean, every single one of these people are funny, they’re generous, and so I think a lot of that chemistry did make it into the movie, and I’m excited for people to see that.”

‘I Know These Are Bold Words’: Sebastian Stan Compares Thunderbolts* to a Classic Brat Pack Movie
Thunderbolts* actor Sebastian Stan explains why the best way to describe the upcoming MCU movie is with a classic Brat Pack movie by John Hughes.
Stan, who reprises his role of Bucky Barnes for the tenth time in Thunderbolts*, also revealed that the superhero movie will have more practical effects than in previous Marvel Cinematic Universe installments. “It has its own vibe, and it’s funny, and it’s real, and we did actual real stunts, like when you’re watching a truck blow up, it’s a truck blown up. It’s not CGI,” Stan shared, explaining, “Marvel really wanted this to have its own- there were many things in the movie that were actually done practically, and I think that does go a long way, because people are just smart. I think audiences just, they know.”
The cast of characters associated with Thunderbolts* lends itself to real stunts over CG-enhanced setpieces. Unlike the Avengers, whose characters need motion-capture work (Hulk, Iron Man) or special effects (Thor, Doctor Strange) to bring their powers to life, the Thunderbolts are mostly all super soldiers and/or spies, with no CGI enhancements needed to bring their characters to life on the big screen. Stan’s comments truly suggest that fans will be treated to an MCU movie that Marvel Studios has not really made for some time.
