Former President Jimmy Carter honored for humanitarian legacy with Habitat for Humanity
CHICO, Calif. — Former President Jimmy Carter was laid to rest Thursday morning, leaving behind a legacy of humanitarian work and dedication to affordable housing. Known for his extensive contributions to Habitat for Humanity, Carter, alongside his wife Rosalynn, spent over 35 years volunteering with the organization, championing affordable housing for families worldwide.
“We have someone on our board who met the Carters and we have someone who’s a long term volunteer who served on a number of Carter builds. That connection, the Carters were so humble and inviting that they welcomed people and really, truly made a difference,” said Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of Butte County Nicole Bateman.
Habitat for Humanity of Butte County described Carter as a ‘strong humanitarian leader’ with deep ties to the organization. In honor of Carter’s funeral on Thursday, the group held a door signing ceremony to commemorate the couple’s legacy. The signed door will be incorporated into Habitat’s latest affordable housing development in Chico, named Rosalynn Court.
“We’re actually going to be working on Rosalynn Court and that’s named after the first lady and we’re really proud of that. The project will be starting probably in March or April of this year and we hope to have those houses completed in 2026,” explained Bateman.
The annual ‘Carter Work Project,’ held in a different location each year, continues to connect current Habitat volunteers to the dedication exemplified by the Carter family. As Habitat for Humanity of Butte County persists in providing homeownership opportunities to community members, representatives say each build will include the same love the Carters had for others.
“They have been great ambassadors and great spokespeople for Habitat for all those years and their legacy will live on with Habitat, every Habitat home built, and every family served,” Bateman concluded.
Habitat encourages the community to pay tribute to the Carters’ enduring impact. The door will be available for signing at 220 Meyers Street in Chico.
