Myanmar focuses on Blue Economy development

The Coastal Resources Management Central Committee held its sixth meeting in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
Speaking at the meeting, State Administration Council Member Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Transport and Communications General Mya Tun Oo, who is also chairman of the central committee, said the ASEAN states and world countries develop the Blue Economy to achieve UN’s sustainable goals. When it comes to the Blue Economy potentials of Myanmar, there are many opportunities for development as the country has a variety of coastal regions and marine ecosystems for environmental services, and can conduct onshore and offshore fishing and breed marine resources and pearls to produce various marine products like fish, prawn and crabs. Moreover, the country also possesses potential for offshore oil and natural gas extraction, renewable energy like solar, hydro and wind power, international standard jetties as it is located in strategic areas for world marine trade route, tourism development for having natural beaches and islands. The diverse cultures of ethnic communities and locals living in coastal regions can also be preserved.
There are not only many opportunities for Blue Economy but also challenges to be resolved.
He then urged the government, private, NGOs and entrepreneurs to work practically for the sustainable development of coastal regions.
Afterwards, the central committee secretary the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation reported on the work plans of the committee.
The General made a concluding remark after hearing the reports submitted by region and state chief ministers, the deputy chief of staff (Navy), deputy ministers, permanent secretaries, and officials. — MNA/KTZH
