A dense fog shrouded Delhi and surrounding areas on Saturday morning, disrupting flight and train services, as the national capital continued to reel under cold wave conditions.

The India Meteorological Department predicted thunderstorms with rain in Delhi on Saturday and issued a yellow alert. The maximum temperature is expected to drop by at least three degrees, and the sky is likely to remain cloudy, the weather bureau said.

Over 100 flights were delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), with the airport issuing advisories urging passengers to check with their airlines for updates regarding their airline timings. Train services were also hit, with several delays reported across major routes.

Furthermore, over 26 trains are running late, officials said.

The minimum temperature in Delhi recorded a marginal increase on Friday morning, reaching 11°C, attributed to an active western disturbance.

Heavy Rain Likely In Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall in Delhi over the weekend. The weather department predicts that thunderstorms, lightning, and dense fog are likely to affect the national capital on Saturday and Sunday.

“Dense to very dense fog is likely at isolated places over east Uttar Pradesh, dense fog at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and west Uttar Pradesh,” it added.

The air quality in Delhi remained in the ‘severe’ category, according to local reports. However, no immediate data was available from the Central Pollution Control Board on AQI at 7 a.m. today.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good,’ 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory,’ 101 and 200 ‘moderate,’ 201 and 300 ‘poor,’ 301 and 400 ‘very poor,’ and 401 and 500 ‘severe.’
