Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Unveils Rs 50,000 Crore Plan To Revitalize India’s Inland Waterways
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has announced a groundbreaking Rs 50,000 crore plan to transform India’s inland waterways over the next five years. The plan, aimed at enhancing national waterways infrastructure, was revealed during the second meeting of the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) held on January 10, 2025, in Kaziranga, Assam. The event saw the participation of key officials, including Union Minister of State for MoPSW, Shantanu Thakur, and transport ministers from various states.
Key Announcements and Investments
Among the major announcements was the launch of the Riverine Community Development Scheme, which aims to uplift communities along the national waterways by promoting trade, tourism, skill development, and preserving traditional riverine knowledge. In addition, the government introduced the National River Traffic and Navigation System (NRT&NS) to ensure safe and smooth vessel movement across the waterways.
The Jalvahak scheme was also unveiled to incentivize long-haul cargo movement on major routes like NW 1 (Ganga), NW 2 (Brahmaputra), and NW 16 (Barak). The government also announced plans to introduce 1,000 green vessels over the next five years, reinforcing its commitment to environmentally sustainable shipping.
Job Creation and Regional Development Focus
Sonowal emphasized the employment opportunities that would arise from the development of shipbuilding and repair facilities across national waterways. These efforts aim to reduce logistics costs, support ancillary industries, and create jobs for riverine communities.
In Assam, over Rs 1,000 crore has been allocated to improve waterways, including the establishment of a Regional Centre of Excellence in Dibrugarh and the construction of four new tourist jetties. Goa will receive 10 new community jetties, while Uttar Pradesh will benefit from the creation of floating jetties and a ship repair facility in key locations.
Sustainability and International Connectivity
The government has earmarked over Rs 23,000 crore for green shipping initiatives and the development of new waterways. Amphibian and cutter suction dredgers will be deployed to maintain navigable routes and ensure smooth vessel operations. Additionally, regional connectivity with neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar is a key focus, with the aim to enhance trade and economic cooperation.
A Vision for Economic Growth
The Rs 50,000 crore investment plan is a significant step towards unlocking the potential of India’s inland waterways, positioning them as a reliable and sustainable mode of transport for both passengers and cargo. As Sarbananda Sonowal concluded, these investments will drive economic growth, reduce congestion on roads and railways, and improve the quality of life for communities living along the waterways.
