Prep hockey: First Cloquet Hockey Day offers split decisions for CEC boys and girls

On Saturday night, Cloquet hosted its first Cloquet Hockey Day, with both Cloquet/Esko/Carlton boys and girls hockey teams playing. The CEC boys lost to Sartell in a 2-1 overtime thriller, while CEC girls took down the Northern Tier Stars, 2-0.

In a first-of-a-kind day with high energy, the CEC boy’s team came out a bit flat footed, failing to score until the third period, when they trailed 1-0. Grady Knutson scores to make it a 1-1 game and force overtime, but just four minutes into the session, Sartell scored the game winner.

Both Jacob Iallonardo and Jamis Halverson logged substantial minutes in net, tallying eleven and seven saves respectively.

CEC next turns to take on Grand Rapids on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

For the CEC girls, they had to wait over an hour for their game to start, but when it did, they came out firing, as Reese Kuklinski found the back of the net in the first period for the CEC lead, which they would hold onto.

CEC next hosts Hibbing/Chisholm on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
