‘Oh, I’m No Longer 22’: David Schwimmer Talks About His On-Set Injury While Filming Goosebumps: The Vanishing

David Schwimmer is admitting he’s not as young as he used to be after he hurt his back filming the Hulu/Disney+ series Goosebumps: The Vanishing. The Friends actor said he got a bit sore after the injury on the set of his new show, based on the R.L. Stine books, which premiered on Jan. 10.

“There was a day filming Goosebumps that required doing a stunt over and over,” Schwimmer told People. “I get spun on the stool sitting at my desk and yanked forward. I didn’t really hurt myself, but the next day I was like, ‘Oh, I’m no longer 22,’ said the Emmy-nominated actor, who is 58. He added that “everything” in his body felt a little sore after the incident, especially his back.

Schwimmer continued, “We rehearsed it and practiced, and I did it a bunch of times and (I felt) fine,” he said. “And then, the next day I was like, okay, that’s why (my body) hurts,” he said.

R.L. Stine Reveals Which Goosebumps Book He Wants Adapted Next

Goosebumps creator R.L. Stine reminds readers just how much the series has to offer while discussing which entry he wants adapted next.

Based on the classic R.L. Stine Books

Goosebumps: The Vanishing is based on the evil plants from Stine’s “Stay Out of the Basement,” but with a dark twist. The backstory is that in 1994, four teenagers turned up missing when they ventured under New York City. Now, 30 years later, twin siblings CeCe (Jayden Bartels) and Devin (Sam McCarthy) visit their father, Anthony (Schwimmer) in Brooklyn. However, Anthony has a past linked to the disappearances 30 years ago.

Schwimmer Says He Brought Some Humor to the Role

In an interview with CBR, Schwimmer talked about his Goosebumps role and the character he plays, which is quite different from his Friends’ character, Ross Geller. “There’s a tragic backstory with the loss of his brother,” Schwimmer said. “And I think this is something that we’ll realize, as the series unfolds, that there’s a huge mystery of what happened to his older brother. When Anthony was only 9 years old, his older brother disappeared tragically. So that’s affected his whole life, obviously, and the (lives) of his whole family,” Schwimmer added.

Although he admitted the role in the new series is “pretty heavy,” he said he did manage to find some humor in it. “I think we found a way. Not only is the writing really good, but I think I was able to collaborate with the writers and directors and really, really mine as much comedy as possible. I think you’ll see the tone of the humor is very different in this show It’s all about tone, but I think we accomplished it. So, fingers crossed!” Schwimmer said.

Goosebumps: It’s Fun, Scary, and Spooky

Bartels and McCarthy, who play fraternal twins in Goosebumps: The Vanishing, are both championing the new season of the series. “Go watch Goosebumps,” Bartels told CBR. “You’re gonna love it, and you’re gonna love us, hopefully! I hope! I think that people will have a lot to relate to. And it’s fun, it’s scary, it’s spooky. Enjoy!” Bartels said. McCarthy added, “I’m particularly excited for the ghost next door, to be honest. Because the biggest thing is, there are moments, in that, selfishly as an actor, I had a lot of fun with. And I think, I think it’s a good episode.”
