Inside Out 2 Director Recalls Their Unique Approach to the Movie

Inside Out 2 appealed to a wider audience as a relatable, coming-of-age story. Director Kelsey Mann credited their success to the teenagers who consulted on the movie.

Director Kelsey Mann explained why Inside Out 2 resonated with audiences of all ages; the film explored the timeless theme of change through an adolescent’s growing pains. “We want to make a movie that the whole family can enjoy, regardless of your age,” he told Variety. “We all tried to dig into our own experiences. It started with me alone in a room looking at my own life and what it was like to be that age.” However, Mann admitted that relating to the sequel’s protagonist was a challenge; only teenage girls can accurately describe Riley Anderson’s internal conflicts.

Why Riley’s Emotions Don’t Look Like Her in Inside Out

Although many characters in the Inside Out franchise have emotions that look like them, Riley don’t, which has created a unique mystery.

They showed multiple versions of Inside Out 2 to teenage girls aged 13 to 16, and their feedback proved critical to the success of the film. “I wanted to have that perspective,” Mann asserted. “I want somebody who has lived the experience that Riley has… We did a really fun thing where we got together a whole advisory group of [nine] teenage girls, but I thought I had to sell the studio on it.” This could mean drastically different scenes from the sequel were scrapped after test screening (some were recently included as bonus content in the digital release). That included one emotion that was scrapped from the sequel.

Inside Out 2’s New Emotions Almost Included Shame

Shame almost joined Anxiety in building Inside Out 2‘s tension. A deleted scene revealed Riley feeling shame for the first time, when her friend outs her with an embarrassing secret. Mann didn’t confirm how the scene fared in the test screening, but the film was better off without it. Shame is a darker emotion that’s best explored in another installment. “I wanted to explore that feeling that you’re not good enough, that feeling that you’re really hard on yourself,” Mann told Entertainment Weekly. Inside Out 2 instead focused on Anxiety and Riley’s defining moment.

Inside Out 2 Ending Explained

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has a thought-provoking ending that has Joy, Anxiety and the other emotions clashing as they try to control Riley’s life.

Mann confirmed the initial version of Inside Out 2 was darker than the final cut. “It was not fun to watch,” he told The Wrap. “It was not fun. It was too heavy.” The sequel was initially slated to debut nine new emotions, but Mann narrowed it down to four to uplift the film’s comedic elements. Mann pitched Anxiety as the crux of Riley’s crisis, however. Screenplay writer Meg LeFauve said Mann’s opening pitch to Pixar confirmed Inside Out 2‘s premise. “‘What if anxiety hijacked Riley?'” she recalled.

Inside Out 2 was an overwhelming success at the box office, earning almost $1.7 billion against its $200 million budget. Inside Out 3 is reportedly in development.

Inside Out 2 is streaming on Disney+.
