Peter Hirs to succeed Howard Smith as Starr CFO

Starr has announced the appointment of Peter Hirs as the company’s chief financial officer, effective January 13.

Hirs will be taking over the role from Howard I. Smith, who is retiring after a long and successful career spanning over 40 years at Starr and its related entities.

Smith has been leading Starr’s financial operations since 2005, when the company was re-established as an free-standing investment and insurance organisation by Maurice R. “Hank” Greenberg, Starr’s chairman emeritus.

Smith’s association with Greenberg dates back even further, having first joined him in 1984 and worked closely with him prior to taking on the leadership of financial operations.

With a 20-year tenure at a global insurance carrier, Hirs brings extensive finance and insurance expertise to Starr.

His background includes managing regional finance teams across the globe and spearheading mergers and acquisitions activities, making him a valuable asset to the company.

In his new role as CFO, based in New York, Hirs will oversee the organization’s global finance operations.

“Peter will be a critical partner in achieving our global ambitions,” Starr’s chairman and co-CEO, Jeff Greenberg said. “In addition to his excellent finance experience, he has demonstrated that he is aligned with our culture and values. We thank Howie for his many contributions, and we welcome Peter to Starr.”
