Chanel Billionaires Invest in a Groundbreaking Fashion Startup

At the end of 2024, the owner of L’Oréal and Chanel took stakes in a previously little-known fashion label. This brand, which dresses various English royals, aligns with the growing trend of «quiet luxury».

Founded in 2006 in the United States by former actresses Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen, The Row has made a name for itself as a fashion label catering to both women and men. It is known for outfitting international celebrities, including Kate Middleton, as well as Hollywood stars like Kendall Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence.

Simplistic Elegance

In the fashion industry, The Row is considered a near-perfect embodiment of understated, discreet luxury. Its designs are celebrated for their minimalist elegance and a strong focus on traditional craftsmanship.

This level of sophistication comes at a price: a men’s shirt can cost upwards of $1,500, while a women’s coat may easily reach $9,000.

Low-Key on Social Media

When it comes to social media presence, The Row takes a notably more restrained approach compared to other luxury brands.

This concept has found favor in the highest echelons of the European lifestyle and luxury industries.

Bettencourt Meyers and the Wertheimers

Last fall, L’Oréal heiress Françoise Bettencourt Meyers and Chanel owners Alain and Gérard Wertheimer invested in The Row. Wertheimer is a resident of Geneva, Switzerland.

Their involvement reportedly valued the brand at over $1 billion, according to «Bloomberg» (article available behind a paywall).
