Over 250 flights delayed at Delhi Airport as fog reduces visibility

More than 250 flights got delayed as dense fog-induced low visibility conditions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Wednesday morning.

As per airport sources, poor visibility conditions at Delhi or destination airport led to flight delays, diversions as well as a few cancellations.

The IGIA experienced low visibility from 5.00 a.m till noon on Wednesday morning.

The airport experienced extreme low visibility conditions between 5.00 am and 9.00 am on Wednesday morning. During this period majority of flights got diverted or cancelled.

The visibility during these hour dropped below the required standard under the LVP (low visibility procedure).

Notably, landings under CATIIIB ILS on RVR (runway visual range) basis are allowed even if visibility is at 50 meters and take-off at 125 metres.

Meanwhile, over 250 flights were delayed as airport sources told businessline that these were caused mainly due to operational and safety reasons.

The airport, on average, caters to 95 flight movements per hour or around 1,200 per day.

“Due to dense fog at Delhi, multiple flights have been impacted. Passengers may contact the concerned Airline for flight updates,” Delhi International Airport which maintains and operates IGIA said in a tweet on X (formerly Twitter).

The data on flightradar24.com, the time period of average arrival and departure delay rose due to the cascading effect.

“My flight to Varanasi got cancelled this morning leading me to book another flight on an immediate basis because of the urgency of travel. The cost of the alternative flight was more than the cancelled flight. The experience was extremely chaotic,” Archit Dixit, a resident of south Delhi, told businessline.

According to an official with a leading airline said that no cancellation has been reported, however, delays have occurred due to congestion at the airport, “but nothing significant”.
