Chanel gets us thinking outside the box with new makeup collection

Chanel gets us thinking outside the box with its latest Spring Summer 2025 makeup collection. Created by Comètes Collective member Ammy Drammeh, this new range focuses on playful colour and beautiful skin finishes for near endless makeup possibilities.

Makeup is such a great way to play with colour, after all, every look is both changeable and fleeting. Nothing is permanent with makeup – and that impermanence gives us a certain kind of freedom to just go with a whim.

This week, Chanel has launched its Spring-Summer 2025 Makeup Collection and it encourages us to bounce between two camps: tone-on-tone makeup and playful audacious colour. Let me explain.

Titled “ColourMatch” this collection from Ammy Drammeh, one third of Chanel Beauty’s Comètes Collective, and the Chanel Makeup Creation Studio, asks us to try one of two things: monochrome (where only one shade is used all over the face), or bold colour combinations.

This playful range is one of my favourite collections to come from the Comètes Collective since the group of expert makeup artists formed in 2023. The reason is simple: it ticks so many boxes.

Inspired by some of Mademoiselle Chanel’s signature colour schemes – namely colour blocking and twin sets – this is a makeup collection that lends itself to so many of the looks we want to try this summer.

Tonal looks

Monochrome, the technique which focuses on a singular shade, is not just smart, it’s very, very pretty.

We all know that drilling down to one shade, whether it’s in fashion or sticking to the one shade on eyes, lips, cheeks and nails, not only looks incredibly chic, it can also save precious minutes in prep work. In this collection there are juicy pinks and peach that will do monochrome well without feeling daunting for those trying the method for the first time.

There is the new Rouge Coco Baume in Tender Peach, which has more shine and hydration that previously, will be a shade you reach for time and time again, while the matte beige eyeshadow and eye pencil both win for everyday wear.

Colour combinations to try

There are also moments in this collection to play with hue. Going on the concept of twin sets, where each of the Ombre Essentielle eyeshadow monos partner up with a corresponding eye pencil, there is plenty to love.

A shimmering mint green eyeshadow and nail polish (definitely give this pretty green a try on your toenails at the very least) feel fresh and fun for right now. While the jewel-like purple, from the lilac-toned eyeshadow, to the punchy deep purple kohl eyeliner feel set to become favourites this season. Incidentally, both team beautifully with the sheer lip balm which tinges lips rather than overpowers them.

Focus on skin

What I adore about this collection though is that it’s all tied together with skin – your best skin too. If you look at nothing else from the range, consider investing in the (satisfyingly) oversize multi-use eyeshadow and highlight palette. With shades of pink coral, rosy gold, a pinky shimmer and a copper-flecked gold, the tone-on-tone nature of this palette makes it incredibly flattering for us all.

Promising to be a workhorse in your kit, the palette adds instant warmth to skin, cheeks and eyes, while the shimmering nature of the four shades adds gleam to skin (add it to your decolletage and shoulders too) in the very best way. Another bonus? It can be applied sheer like a second skin or layered up for a bold radiance.

What’s exciting about this collection is how it effortlessly weaves in and out of playful pops of hue and beautiful tonal neutrals for looks that are not only flattering for everyday wear but also, when you want it, just a bit thrilling too.
