‘Indian cricketers are indisciplined…’ BCCI cracks whip on Team India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly implementing stricter guidelines for Indian cricketers, focusing on discipline, family stay regulations, domestic cricket participation, and travel restrictions. The move comes in response to concerns about player conduct and commitment to domestic cricket.

A BCCI source revealed, “Indian cricketers are indisciplined. Gautam [Gambhir] and one senior player are on the same page on the topic of family stay.”

New Regulations on Family Stay and Travel

A senior BCCI official revealed that discussions are underway to streamline player behaviour and commitment during international tours.

Restricted Family Stay: For tours exceeding 45 days, players’ family members can stay for a maximum of 14 days. For shorter foreign tours, immediate family members will be permitted for only a week.

Strict Team Travel Rules: Players will no longer be allowed to take independent transport for commuting during practice or matches. The board has also barred players from traveling with personal staff, including cooks, hairdressers, stylists, and personal security guards.

“These changes are aimed at improving team discipline and ensuring a more professional and unified culture,” a BCCI source stated.

Crackdown on Domestic Cricket Absence

In a bold proposal, a senior player has suggested that the BCCI should withhold match fees from players who skip domestic tournaments.

“One senior player was in the meeting to suggest the idea to BCCI of not distributing match fees to those who do not want to play domestic cricket,” the source confirmed.

This proposal aligns with the board’s broader strategy to prioritize domestic cricket as a stepping stone to international selection and ensure that players remain connected to the domestic circuit.

Stringent measures after disappointment Down Under

The stricter policies come in the wake of India’s 3-1 series defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, which also cost them a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord’s.

Star players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, faced severe criticism for their poor form in the series.

Rohit Sharma scored 31 runs in five innings at an average of 6.20 while Virat Kohli managed 190 runs in nine innings at an average of 23.75, including a solitary century.

The 2024-25 Test season was a disaster for both players:

Rohit Sharma scored 164 runs in eight Tests at an average of 10.93, with only one half-century. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, scored 382 runs in 10 Tests at an average of 22.87, with just one century and one fifty.

With these new disciplinary measures, the BCCI aims to create a more committed and structured team environment. The crackdown on indiscipline, domestic cricket participation, and unnecessary entourage travel reflects the board’s growing concerns over professionalism within the squad.
