New (& Very Unexpected) Alice in Wonderland Movie Announced 73 Years After Disney Film
Lewis Carroll’s iconic Alice in Wonderland, first released in 1865 as a children’s novel, has received a surprise return in the form of an anime movie later, with the film’s debut trailer already announced alongside a summer 2025 release date.
Via Oricon, the first-ever anime film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, titled Alice in Wonderland: Dive in Wonderland,” was announced and will premiere nationwide on Aug. 29, 2025. Nanoka Hara will voice the protagonist, Rise (romanization pending), and Maika Pugh will voice Alice. Readers can check out the first visual, trailer, comments and staff information below.

Alice in Wonderland’s First-Ever Official Anime Movie Reveals Debut Trailer
The anime film Alice in Wonderland: Dive in Wonderland will be produced by TBS Holdings and Shochiku. Toshiya Shinohara (Black Butler) will direct the film and is joined by Yuko Kakihara (The Apothecary Diaries) for the script. Skip and Loafer anime studio P.A. Works will handle the animation production. The new film joins Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing as an upcoming anime film also produced by P.A. Works.
Hara, who played Kana Arima in Oshi no Ko‘s recent live-action adaptation, revealed her surprise at being cast in an anime again. She previously played Suzume Iwato in Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume. On her character Rise, she said, “I think that the main character, Rise, is one that many people, including myself, can sympathize with. This is a work with a mysterious charm that makes you feel as if all the characters’ words are spoken to you. I think this work will reach the hearts of many people, from children to adults, as it heals you with the enchantingly beautiful images of Wonderland, while also giving you a surprising realization. I hope you will look forward to the release.”

Child star Pugh, aged just 10 years old, said she “jumped up and down with joy” after landing the part. In the film, she expressed “various things depending on the scene, such as how much effort I put in and the volume of my voice,” and called on her friends, family, those who already know the story of Alice in Wonderland and those who don’t, to all watch.
Alice in Wonderland: Dive in Wonderland is officially described: “What if you could jump into that Wonderland…? The protagonist of this work is a modern girl named Rise. One day, she gets lost in Wonderland and meets Alice, and the story begins to move.” Alice in Wonderland was previously adapted as the 1983 anime series Fushigi no Kuni no Alice.
