Microsoft Is Not Firing Employees In India, Amidst Global Layoffs – Trak.in

In a latest update, the American multinational technology conglomerate, Microsoft is carrying out job cuts in its offices around the world.

Meta and Microsoft Layoffs 

Reportedly, Tech giants Meta and Microsoft are  cutting back on their headcount.

When it comes to India, here employees in India will not lose their jobs in this round, as per the media report.

The IT giant’s job cuts in the first month of 2025 are related to employee performance.

Under this, the company is action against those who are falling short of expectations, said a Microsoft spokesperson.

The jobs were not being cut in India, and that more jobs were actually being created in the country, said Puneet Chandok, President, Microsoft India and South Asia in a media interaction.

Moreover, these layoffs may only affect less  than 1% of Microsoft’s employees, as per the media report, citing an anonymous source.

Earlier, at the start of this month Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella visited India.

During his visit, he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announced a  $3 billion investment in the country to strengthen AI and cloud infrastructure.

When it comes to Meta, the company is set to cut its workforce by 5%.

On the other hand, Microsoft plans to pause hiring in part of its consulting business and plans to lay off some employees, reportedly.

So far, Meta and Microsoft haven’t replied to the media request to comment.

In case of Meta, it plans to cut about 5% of its “low performers,” as mentioned in a report  citing two internal messages from company executives. 

Presently, Meta has more than 72,000 employees.

The company will be notyfing the employees affected by these layoffs by Feb. 10, as mentioned in the report.

Earlier, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “Meta is working on building some of the most important technologies of the world. AI, glasses as the next computing platform and the future of social media. This is going to be an intense year, and I want to make sure we have the best people on our teams,” in one of the memos, mentioned in the report.

Microsoft Keeping Pause On Hiring 

Keeping pause on hiring is part of the Microsoft consulting division’s efforts to manage costs. 

They have also included instructions to use remote sessions instead of travel for internal meetings, to have executives authorize trips to customers’ sites, and to make 35% cuts in marketing and nonbillable external resource spend.

It appears that 545 tech companies laid off a total of 152,664 employees in 2024, said Layoffs.fyi, a tracker that monitors job cuts in the tech sector.

These figures are drawn from the 1,193 tech companies that laid off 264,220 employees in 2023.

Before this, 1,064 tech companies laid off 165,269 employees in 2022, as mentioned in  the website site.

Meta appears to have fired around two dozen staffers for misusing their meal credits amid a wider series of layoffs at the company in October.

They found their staff members using $25 meal credits to purchase various household items as per the report.
