Former UMD football head coach Bob Nielson retires
After an illustrious 32 year college football coaching career, long time UMD head football coach Bob Nielson is retiring from the sport.
Nielson’s legacy included a 100-26 overall record in the 10 years (1999-2003, 2008-2012) he coached at UMD, including the first two national championships the school had ever won, in 2008 and 2010. Nielson’s last stop in college football was as the head coach of South Dakota football, where he coached for nine seasons and tallied a 53-48 record. Nielson finishes with a career overall record of 239-128-1.
Nielson was part of six NSIC title winning teams, including a conference record five in a row, along with six NCAA playoff berths. Nielson was inducted into the UMD Hall of Fame in 2017, as he also served as the Athletic Director for the Bulldogs from 2004 to 2012.
