Kosman uses Facebook to explain fair trade items
January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and Meghann Kosman of the North Star Advocacy Center is explaining fair trade items on Facebook each Friday, in Fair Trade Fridays.
What is Fair Trade? It is a movement that promotes trading policies that benefit small-scale producers by ensuring they are treated fairly and paid properly for their work. Fair trade organizations advocate for better wages, safe working conditions and sustainable development. It also works to ensure gender equality.
Fair Trade and Human Trafficking? “Many items we buy, often for very low prices, are created and manufactured in dangerous, harmful, and unethical conditions with little to no pay,” Kosman said. “In those places, human trafficking is happening. More consumption equals bigger demand for such places. Fair trade ensures fair and ethical conditions and sustainability.”
