West Indies U19 Women set to face India in World Cup Opener

West Indies Women Under 19 team get their tournament underway tomorrow when they play defending champions India-Women at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

From there they will take on Sri Lanka on Monday January 20 before concluding their group stage against hosts Malaysia on Wednesday January 22.

The teenaged female cricketers from the Caribbean come into the tournament in mixed form having defeated Nepal by nine runs in their opening warm-up match before losing convincingly to New Zealand by 79 runs with seven bowlers of the 10 Kiwi bowlers claiming a wicket.

However, Under 19 coach Robert Samuels is optimistic that this squad will put in a strong performance in this tournament which runs from January 18 to February 2.

Speaking to Nationnews ahead of travelling to Malaysia, Samuels said that he was filled with confidence after seeing the squad in specialised camps and various tours. “We had decent preparation and we are happy going off to Malaysia. The girls are in good spirits and many of them are competing in their first world cup, for some of them this is their second. It’s the second world cup the West Indies Under-19 women are going to be involved in so it’s something very new for Caribbean cricket,” he said.

The Jamaican, who took over the squad in June last year, noted “We had a tour against the USA, we played six matches with one rained out and won that series 3-2, then we had a series of matches in England against slightly older opposition and that told us where we were. We had a skill camp and a workout in the middle so I am happy with what I have in the short time I have had it.”

West Indies qualified for this competition through their participation in the 2023 edition, having finished second in their group but fifth in the Super Six stage. They will be joined by Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka while Malaysia are there as hosts.

Nepal, Nigeria, Samoa, Scotland and the United States make up the rest of the competitors who have qualified through their various regional qualification tournaments. It will be the first World Cup appearance across any age group for Samoa while the tournament also marks Malaysia’s maiden appearance at the Under 19 Women’s World Cup.

The 16 teams in this T20 competition are divided into four groups of four in a round-robin format with the top three from each group making it to the Super Six Stage comprising 12 teams.

The teams that qualify for the Super Six will carry forward points from the group stage for added context. Each team will play two matches at the Super Six stage, against the teams from the opposing group whose finishing positions were different from its own. The top two from each pool will then advance to the semi-finals.

Matches will be played at four venues: Bayuemas Oval and UKM YSD Oval in Selangor, the JCA Oval in Johor, and Borneo Cricket Ground in Sarawak. (JC)
