Captain America Brave New World Director Explains Why Harrison Ford is the Film’s “Thematic Core”

Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah breaks down the importance of Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk.

Speaking to Fandango, Onah expressed not just his personal excitement at bringing the Red Hulk to life on the silver screen, but the ways in which the character stands as a central thematic element of Captain America: Brave New World. “I’ve gotta tell you, when Red Hulk first became a possibility in this film, I just smiled. I was smiling like a kid, and that’s when I knew this was the right idea and the right moment to put him out there in the world.”

To mark tickets going on sale, Marvel Studios debuts a new Red Hulk-filled trailer for Captain America: Brave New World.

“And having an actor like Harrison Ford play Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross, knowing that he’s going to have scenes with Anthony Mackie, going to have scenes with Danny Ramirez, it’s… The Hulk character is such an expression of pure id,” Onah explained, “But there’s something about, especially a rage Hulk, that is so relatable and exciting for an audience… But there’s also a real thematic core when it comes to the expression of that anger in this film, and what it means about the conflict at the center of this film. So it’s not just like the inner kid in me that’s excited about it, but the director or the storyteller in me is also excited about where this goes, and thematically what this film has to say, which is part of what I think makes it a really exciting Captain America film.”

Captain America: Brave New World brings fan-favorite Anthony Mackie back as Sam Wilson, aka Captain America, to lead a star-studded cast that also includes returning stars Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, aka Falcon, Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns, aka the Leader, Live Tyler as Betty Ross, and Carl Lumbly as the iconic Isaiah Bradley. The film also marks the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Harrison Ford as newly-elected United States President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, whose secret identity as the Red Hulk serves as the crux of much of the action at hand. The role of Thunderbolt Ross was previously played by the late William Hurt, who tragically passed away in 2022.

Harrison Ford Takes Over the Role of Thunderbolt Ross

Back in December, Ford opened up about his concerns regarding stepping into a role previously played by such an esteemed actor, not to mention within a cinematic universe he only had a vague understanding of. “I was a little concerned about taking over from Bill Hurt, who was a wonderful actor,” Ford said. “I was ambitious to find the right way of assuming this character after the audience had seen other people doing it. I’m only slightly familiar with the Marvel Universe – I live in another universe but I have watched a number of Marvel films with wonderful actors, apparently having a good time. And I thought, ‘Well, why not me?”

Captain America: Brave New World is slated to arrive in theaters on February 14.
