50% discount for students in Delhi Metro? Kejriwal seeks PM Modi’s nod, promises free bus service for male students – Infrastructure News

Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal announced on Friday that he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposing a 50% discount for students traveling on the Delhi Metro.

“Delhi’s students rely on Metro for commuting to schools and colleges. To reduce the financial burden on them, I propose a 50% concession to students in Delhi Metro. Delhi Metro is a joint venture between the Central and Delhi governments. The expenditure on this scheme will have to be borne by both,” Kejriwal said in his letter.

“I am hopeful you will agree with this proposal,” he added.

Kejriwal further mentioned that the Delhi government is working on a plan to provide free bus travel for students. Addressing the media later, he said his party has always prioritised education, noting that many poor students in the city have been unable to continue their education due to the high cost of commuting.

“If our party is voted back to power, students will be provided free travel on public transport… Travel is currently free for women on buses, but male students do not get the benefit of this… We see that a lot of students use the Metro in Delhi… but it has become very expensive,” he said.

“The Metro is the lifeline of Delhi… it is a 50-50 venture between the Delhi government and the Centre… I have written to the Prime Minister to share the financial implications of concessional travel on the metro for students, with the Delhi government,” he added, calling it “a matter of public welfare, not politics.”

However, due to the Model Code of Conduct in effect, the decision cannot be implemented until after the Delhi Assembly elections. The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with votes being counted on February 8.
