ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India to launch advanced automotive steel production lines at Hazira plant, ET Auto

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) is set to commission two cutting-edge production lines dedicated to manufacturing advanced automotive steel products at its Hazira plant in Gujarat. This move aims to replace imports of high-end steel required by the automotive sector and promote the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The new lines are scheduled to be fully operational in 2025 and will help meet the growing demand for high-quality steel in India’s automotive sector.

The new facilities include a Continuous Galvanizing Line (CGL) and a Continuous Galvanizing and Annealing Line (CGAL), both incorporating the technical expertise of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. These lines will produce steel with strength levels up to 1180 MPa in both coated and uncoated varieties, catering to the needs of India’s automotive sector. This will mark the first time some of these advanced products will be manufactured in India.

Strategy to strengthen India’s steel ecosystem

Dilip Oommen, CEO of AM/NS India, highlighted that the new production lines align with the company’s strategy to strengthen India’s steel ecosystem and enhance global competitiveness. “These additions will not only indigenously produce products recognized globally but also support the growth of the automotive sector in India,” he said.

This expansion is part of AM/NS India’s efforts to increase its market share in the automotive steel sector, which is experiencing strong growth. The domestic demand for high-quality automotive steel stands at 7.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and is expected to grow by 6-7% annually.

At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, AM/NS India is also showcasing its innovative automotive offerings, including advanced automotive components such as the next-generation door ring and cutting-edge battery packs, further underlining its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
