Sabyasachi Turns 25: Ace Designer Talks About His Vision To Create ‘India’s First Global Luxury Brand’

The House of Sabyasachi turned 25 recently. The designer took to his social media to reflect on his journey and talk about the next chapter of the brand.

India’s celebrated fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee recently celebrated 25 years of his brand. The anniversary celebrations were like no other. It was a beautiful amalgamation of Indian textiles and craftsmanship with Western silhouettes. It was a celebration of Indian maximalism on an unprecedented scale. Sabyasachi took to his social media to share his vision for his brand in this next chapter through a social media post.

Taking to his Instagram, Sabyasachi Mukherjee talked about his journey from Kolkata to the fashion industry. He penned a heartfelt note where he talked about how he ventured into fashion. He wrote, “I was born in 1974 to a middle-class Bengali family, in Calcutta India. My father was a chemical engineer, and my mother a bohemian artist. But it was my two grandmothers who shaped my identity. One taught me the power of minimalism, the other the exuberance of maximalism. When I was in Grade four, I orchestrated a school play. From writing and directing, set design and lighting to the makeup and costumes, it was my first taste as a Creative Director. It was then the idea of Sabyasachi was born.”

Sabyasachi continued, “In 2001, I started my business with a small team of three. I had very little money but an abundance of middle-class idealism. Over time, the fortunes changed. The idealism remained. Today Sabyasachi works with over 3000 artisans from across India who are tirelessly restoring India’s heritage of arts and crafts to its full glory. I have never believed India to be a Third World country. We are a First World Civilisation, where luxury originated and where it has always belonged. Together we are creating India’s First Global Luxury Brand.”

The 25th-anniversary celebration was one of the most coveted events in fashion. The celebrations also included a fashion show where new mom Deepika Padukone opened the show. The show was closed by Christy Turlington. The strictly invite-only event saw some of the biggest names in Bollywood on the red carpet. Celebrities like Ananya Panday, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sonam Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Shabana Azmi, and others dressed to their best.
