Tom Avison appointed Perth Film Studios CEO

Perth Film Studios operator Home Fire has announced two leadership appointments for the upcoming facility, with Sky Studios Elstree director of operations Tom Avison named CEO and WA producer James Grandison joining as business and industry development director.

Avison was among the inaugural team for Sky’s newest UK film and TV studio, which opened in Hertfordshire in 2022.

In his role, he helped accommodate major films such as Wicked, Paddington 3, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and Jurassic World: Rebirth.

He spent the prior decade in leadership roles across the UK Studios industry, serving as head of studios for 3 Mills Studios in East London and the historic Twickenham Studios in West London.

Speaking about his new role, Avison said it was a chance “too good to resist”.

“I have always been attracted to opportunities that are full of creative energy. Having the chance to visit Perth and spend time with the major stakeholders and Home Fire team, it was clear that what is happening in WA with Perth Film Studios is one of those opportunities,” he said.

“Not only did I see a world-class studio facility emerging, but also an experienced and successful screen sector growing at pace. I am very excited and honoured to be joining this team.”

He will be joined at the new facility by Grandison, who comes on board after previously working as a consultant for Home Fire.

After beginning his career in Perth in the early 2000s with acclaimed short film The Paddock, the filmmaker and producer has since amassed nearly 20 production credits, including TV series Picnic at Hanging Rock, Nowhere Boys, and Glitch, as well as recent features Blueback, The Surfer, and He Ain’t Heavy. Having previously been based in London and Melbourne, he has since returned to Perth and is a current member of Screenwest’s Industry Advisory Group,

Home Fire director Howard Cearns said Grandison would “contribute to the overall industry development work required to support incoming productions and ensure WA is increasingly film-friendly” in his new position.

“It is a role that requires close collaboration with the local industry, Screenwest, Ausfilm, and the WA State Government,” he said.

“We have been working with James for a while now and recognise the respect he has in the industry and know what great value he brings to Perth Film Studios.”

Home Fire, a collaboration between WA entities Campfire Stories and Hesperia Property, was named as operator of the new $233.5 million WA production facility in July last year for a minimum 10-year term.

Situated in Malaga, the site has two 20,000 sq ft sound stages, two 25,000 sq ft sound stages, two large workshops, a five-acre backlot plus multi-use area, and stage annexes containing spaces for costume, make-up, offices, editing, storage, and green rooms.

The new appointments come as Home Fire unveiled the new logo for the facility, incorporating a 4:3 ‘Academy’ ratio and the wide ‘Cinemascope’ frames to represent “windows of possibility” for storytelling and showcasing WA’s light, sky, and space.

The Perth Film Studios is expected to open for productions from early next year.
