Sinners Director Reveals Why Michael B. Jordan Horror Film Is “More Exciting” Than Black Panther
The Black Panther film franchise remains the magnum opus of Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed career. However, the filmmaker believes his next project, Sinners, “maybe more exciting” than his Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
Via GamesRadar+, Coogler delved into his time making Sinners, the upcoming Warner Bros. horror flick led by Black Panther franchise star Michael B. Jordan. While the Oscar-winning Black Panther films made Coogler a household name, the director admits he had a more enjoyable experience making Sinners, mainly due to the cast he worked with throughout production and the uniqueness of the characters.

The actor would love to return in a different role.
“This cast reminds me of the [Black] Panther films, but in a way that’s maybe more exciting in that, when audiences watch this, this is gonna be the first time they see these people – there’s no comic books on it. They really made a community when we were filming down in the South, they really looked out for each other,” he said.
Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan Reunite for Sinners
Sinners, which Coogler and Jordan had developed for some time, is a more personal project for Coogler than most. The period film is set in 1930s Mississippi, in the heart of the Jim Crow-era South. The California-born Coogler has relatives who grew up in Mississippi, including his maternal grandfather, with the movie taking some inspiration from his family life.

Sinners was reportedly moved back due to post-production problems.
“My grandfather passed before I was born but we grew up in the house that he built in Oakland, and I was really, really close with my uncle. The seed of this movie started with that relationship,” he said. Coogler also states Sinners is “the most personal thing” he’s done. “The film, for me, was a reclamation of a time and a place that my family doesn’t talk about much, because there’s a lot of feelings associated with our history there. We go there [in this],” he said.
Jordan plays a dual role in Sinners, starring as twin brothers Smoke and Stack. The brothers return to their Mississippi home to start a new life, but realize there’s a greater evil awaiting them after they’ve come back. The film will feature vampires, though Coogler has said that it covers more than the horror genre.
The cast Coogler worked with during Sinners is formidable, with appearances from Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Jack O’Connell and Jayme Lawson. Warner Bros. picked up the film last February, with production running from April to July. Sinners reportedly cost around $90 million to make.
Along with Sinners and the Black Panther films, Coogler and Jordan also collaborated on the critically acclaimed Fruitvale Station and Creed. Coogler is working on the yet-to-be-announced Black Panther threequel, which could feature Denzel Washington after the legendary actor let it slip that the director is writing a part for him in the MCU movie.
Sinners opens in theaters on Apr. 18.
