To take on the right, will Labour go blue?
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue: so it goes for newlyweds in search of good luck, and so it goes for a government in search of deeper meaning. There has always been something of the arranged marriage about Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership of the Labour Party. Angela Rayner uses that metaphor herself. He was hand-picked as an eligible suitor for the party membership and then elected by a country motivated less by love than necessity. Relationships formed in the right place at the right time, government and the governed as two signatories to a very short contract: romantic it ain’t. What does it all mean?
