While astronomers and physicists are constantly engaged in unravelling the mysteries of space and searching for alien life and habitats on distant planets across the universe, there is another group of scientists, who are looking inwards rather than outwards in their quest to discover the mysterious origins of Earth and how life emerged on our planet.
‘Mysterious spots in Pacific Ocean’
A team of scientists in Switzerland have discovered “mysterious spots”, which they dubbed as a “sunken world”, deep in the bosom of the Pacific Ocean. According to the scientists, the spots were likely formed over 4 billion years ago, when the Earth, right at the time of the Earth’s formation.
They believe that Earth’s crust and mantle were also formed and beginning to take shape when the planet came into existence over 4 billion years ago, and the spots may be the result of the formation of dense matter formed in the mantle during the last few hundred million years.
As per the Swiss geologists, the new submerged world the found is different from the other subducted slab discovered so far, because their discovery is located far away from areas with tectonic activity (where the Earth’s tectonic plates collide with each other).
How Swiss geologists found a ‘sunken world’
The team used a seismic data to generate a high-resolution model of the Earth’s interior. Using full-waveform inversion, a technique that combines multiple seismic values to produce a high-quality, detailed image, the Piz Daint supercomputer — housed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center in Lugano, Switzerland– generated a high-res model of inner Earth.
The Swiss scientists said the groundbreaking discovery has encouraged their effort, but the mystery behind the blobs in the Pacific Ocean remains unsolved.
Thomas, a PhD student at the Geological Institute, said that while the discovery is encouraging, it is not yet known what these spots are. “We do not know exactly what they are. We are studying these blob in detail and doing more in-depth research.”
Earth’s mysterious origins
Other scientists have their own theories about how the spots or blobs were formed, theorizing that these must have been formed during the formation of the earth.
Additionally, the discovery also casts a doubt on several widely acclaimed geological theories, and also opens up new opportunities for research on the origins of the Earth in a completely new direction.
Scientists are now investigating these “submerged worlds” as they strive to learn about the origins of our planet and how landforms were created due tectonic movement and their mobility over billions of years in Earth’s history.
