UN bodies pledge to support programmes of Rural Development Ministry

A discussion on the programme to empower low-income families and eradicate poverty in the country was held recently at the Ministry, between the Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Minister Upali Pannilage and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Marc-Andre Franche.
Minister Pannilage informed the UN representative about the community empowerment programme and rural development programme being implemented by the Ministry.
Representatives from several organisations, including the United Nations Children’s Fund, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Labour Organization, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, and the United Nations Development Programme, participated in the discussion.
The representatives stated that they will provide the necessary support whenever possible to make the Government’s policy statement of ‘A Rich Country, a Beautiful Life’ a success and accordingly, they will garner international support and related funds for programmes to empower low-income families and eradicate poverty in the country. Deputy Minister Wasantha Piyatissa, Ministry Secretary Malarmadhee Gangadharan and senior officials of the Ministry participated in the meeting.
