Matt & Ross Duffer Reveal ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 “Movie Scale” and Future Spinoff Plans

Netflix
is preparing to bring one of its most successful shows to a close this year with the fifth and final season of Stranger Things
. However, as we already know, this is not really the end of the Stranger Things story, as even though the flagship series will wrap up the story of Eleven and her friends’ battle against the evil of Vecna, the Duffer brothers have made no secret of the fact that is more stories to tell. Matt and Ross Duffer reiterated this during a globally live-streamed Netflix preview event (via EW).

The pair essentially gave fans a catch-up session on everything they have said about the return of the series in the last year, starting with a reminder of exactly how big this season is going to be in terms of scale. Ross Duffer said:

“We spent a full year filming this season. By the end, we had captured over 650 hours of footage. So, needless to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It’s like eight blockbuster movies. It’s pretty, pretty insane.”

Matt Duffer followed this, reiterating the emotional journey that the cast has been on as they come to the end of the road.

“At the same [time], we think it’s — or hope it’s — our most personal story. It was super intense and emotional to film — for us and for our actors we’ve been with for so long. And we’ve been making it together for almost 10 years now. There was a lot of crying. There was so much crying. The show means so much to all of us, and everyone put their hearts and souls into it. And we hope — and believe — that passion is going to translate to the screen.”

‘Stranger Things’ Future Shows Teased

As we already know, the world of Stranger Things is not contained to just the one linear story centered around Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven. There is already the stage play prequel, which made its debut in London’s West End in 2024, and Matt Duffer went on to tease where things go next.

“There are more Stranger Things stories to tell and in the works. It’s a bit early at this point to talk about them, but we’re deeply involved in every one. It’s very important to us that anything with the Stranger Things name on it is of the highest quality and not repetitive, that it has a reason to exist and always blazes its own path. And also, it needs to basically just be awesome — or we need to think it’s awesome. And there are a lot of what we think are awesome things in the pipeline.”

It’s hard to imagine the actors of ‘Stranger Things’ playing any other characters in the show — but that’s almost what wound up happening.

Of course, there have already been tie-in novels and interactive games based on the Upside-Down and the Stranger Things universe, so it is hardly surprising that Netflix wants to continue to build its baby in the coming years. For now, though, fans are eagerly waiting to find out how the current story ends.

Stranger Things Season 5 will feature a one-year time jump despite the cliff-hanger ending of Season 4. Returnees include Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Brett Gilman, Priah Ferguson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Cara Buono, and Amybeth McNulty. Keeping with the long-standing tradition of the show, an ‘80s movie icon will be joining the story in the form of Terminator legend Linda Hamilton, along with other newcomers, Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, and Alex Breaux.
