Natasha Lyonne Recalls Losing Major Movie Role to Neve Campbell
Natasha Lyonne is spilling the tea regarding her audition for the racy 1998 film Wild Things. “I was nailing it,” she said of her audition for the role of Suzie Toller that eventually would go to Neve Campbell. “But I was definitely not getting that part. It was not what they were looking for,” Lyonne said.
Variety reports Lyonne touched on the matter at a Q&A and screening of her film His Three Daughters. She also currently stars in the Peacock series Poker Face.
Wild Things, an erotic thriller known for its sexual scenes and twisted plot, was directed by John McNaughton. Lyonne touched on how she would read for roles that were described as “a tough chick with black eyeliner,” who’s been in trouble with the law, and she would show up in character only to see that’s not what the producers were aiming for at all. For her Wild Things audition, Lyonne said she was told to “dress like a Robert Palmer girl,” like from the “Simply Irresistible” music video.
Natasha Lyonne Had the Wrong Look for Wild Things
Lyonne said she came into the audition with slicked-backed hair and heavy makeup, but soon discovered they wanted to go a different way, and the character was to be portrayed as more of an introvert. She praised Campbell’s performance in Wild Things. “Clearly, she’s a wonderful actress and the film holds up,” Lyonne said. However, she said she thought the audition should have read more like: “A girl on the fringes, one who would try to hail a taxi in Los Angeles and not understand how it works,” she said.
The actress was also up for another iconic role in the 1990s. In a 2023 appearance on The Howard Stern Show, she said had been the original choice for the part of Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer before Sarah Michelle Gellar was cast. Lyonne said she turned down the role because she didn’t want to “be committed” to the WB channel at the age of 16. Lyonne added she also turned down a part on the WB’s Dawson’s Creek, and said the WB offered her a part on “any of the shows” it was making at that time. Alyson Hannigan, also a guest on the Howard Stern Show at the same time as Lyonne, was shocked that she was offered the part. Hannigan expressed doubt about the casting and said it may not have been a confirmed offer at that time.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Lyonne was joining the MCU in the new The Fantastic Four: First Steps film. Her role in the film has yet to be announced. It being directed by Matt Shakman for Disney+, and will be set in the 1960s, with Pedro Pascal starring as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic. Also joining the cast are Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), Ralph Ineson (Galactus) and Julia Garner (Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer).
