Canada’s chief scientist spent thousands on UFO survey despite low public interest

Dr. Mona Nemer, Canada’s chief science advisor, commissioned a $34,369 national survey on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), despite findings that most Canadians have little interest in the subject.

“Unidentified aerial phenomenon is not an issue of high concern to respondents,” stated the survey report.

“Just 7% say they pay a lot of attention to the topic.”

Blacklock’s Reporter says Nemer, a biochemist earning $393,000 annually, expressed personal curiosity about UAPs and sought to explore how the federal government could better collect and analyze reports.

However, public appetite for government spending on the issue was low. “Only 1 in 10 feel it is very important to dedicate funds to investigate reported sightings,” the report noted.

Conducted by Ottawa-based Earnscliffe Strategy Group, the study surveyed 1,008 Canadians, with 27% claiming they had seen an unidentifiable object or phenomenon in the sky.

However, only 10% of those who had a sighting ever reported it, often citing uncertainty about what they had actually seen.

British Columbians reported the highest number of sightings (32%), followed by Ontarians (29%) and Prairie residents (25%).

When asked what they believed UAPs to be, 10% pointed to aliens, while others cited weather (5%), foreign governments (4%), drones or satellites (4%), the Canadian government (3%), and the military (3%). Only 10% strongly agreed that UAPs posed a flight safety risk.

Despite the skepticism, Nemer advocated for a federal agency to take responsibility for collecting and analyzing UAP reports.

In a separate report, she noted that while “rarely does anyone mistake a flock of geese flying in V formation for a fighter squadron,” unexplained airborne sightings still warrant a structured response.

She recommended that Canada develop “a proactive strategy to increase transparency and communication with the public regarding unmanned aerial phenomena.”
