From “Money Games” To “Close Ur Kopitiam”: Top 5 Highest-Grossing CNY Movies At Malaysian Box Office So Far

The recent Chinese New Year celebration welcomed the release of many Lunar New Year movies, both local and international. However, which movie was the most popular among all these new releases?

News outlets have recently reported that the Malaysian-made CNY movie, “Money Games (半斤百两)”, grossed a whopping RM4.8 million in ticket sales since its release on 28th January 2025 (Thursday). With this achievement, the movie is now the best-selling CNY movie of this year in just five days. The action-comedy flick touches on money scams and stars local and Hong Kong acts, including Jack Lim (林德荣), Eric Tsang (曾志偉), Bobby- Au-yeung (歐陽震華) and Edmond So (蘇志威).

The second highest-grossing CNY movie is another Malaysian-made flick, “Close Ur Kopitiam (关你茶室)”. According to reports, the flick has exceeded RM4.1 million in sales since its release on 29th January 2025 (Wednesday). The movie stars local creator group DISSY (低清) and Singaporean actor Mark Lee (李国煌). “Close Ur Kopitiam” is a comedy about a local coffee shop that got caught up in a media storm with a popular influencer.

While not a CNY flick, the Chinese blockbuster “Creation Of the Gods II: Demon Force (封神第二部:战火西岐)” grossed RM4 million in box office sales, making it the third best-selling release from CNY week. Meanwhile, the Singaporean comedy “I Want To Be Boss (AI拼才会赢)” exceeded RM2.8 million in box office sales since its release on the first day of CNY. Chinese buddy film “Detective Chinatown 1900 (唐探1900)” also makes it into the top five movies from CNY week, grossing RM2 million in sales.
