World Bank project warns against bush burning in Nasarawa — News — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Agro-climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), a World Bank-financed project designed to tackle issues of land degradation and climate, has raised the alarm over the danger of bush burning in the state.

ACReSAL, while embarking on an aggressive campaign against bush burning and its effect raised the alarm in its state-wide sensitisation and awareness in Lafia and Doma local governments on Monday.

The Program Coordinator of ACReSAL Nasarawa, Dr. Napoleon Gyobe Elias, while addressing residents of Lafia and Doma warned that land degradation, elimination of wildlife, and destruction of the ecosystem affecting food production are some of the effects of bush burning.

“We must stop bush burning because of the huge side effects on our ecosystem, food production. Every time dry bushes are burnt, we lose plants and animals and forest. The consequence is climate change,” Napoleon appealed.

Napoleon appealed to residents to protect the forest and the soil by planting more trees. He, however, regretted that bush burning caused havoc on trees planted in the state.

He cautioned rural dwellers and farmers to avoid bush burning and engage in tree planting to mitigate the grievous danger of climate change.

The permanent secretary, Nasarawa State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Garba Rosha-Mohammed, commended ACReSAL for championing the campaign against bush burning in the state.

Rosha-Mohammed, who noted that bush burning has caused huge damage to farmers and the environment, appealed to residents in the rural areas to shun bush burning as the dey season dips.
