“Work hard to make India important enough on the global scene to be offered a seat on the Security Council,” says Narayana Murthy
Information Technology major Infosys’ Founder NR Narayana Murthy advised students of SAI University to work hard to make India important enough on the global scene to be offered a seat on the Security Council, without the country asking for it.
In his address at the first convocation of the SAI university near Chennai, Murthy urged students to make India have the best educational and research system in the world so that every other nation will aspire to send their men and women to India for education, like it happens in the US today.
“You must work to make India have the best defence force in the world. You must work to make every Indian achieve the best standard of living in the world. You must work to make India the largest exporter in the world,” he said. “You must work on India, the best governed country in the world,” he added.
There is only one way to make India a powerful nation. That is through performance. Desirable performance requires you to create aspirational targets and work hard. Work fast, smart, honestly and in a disciplined manner over a long period of time to achieve these targets. “Remember that honesty, discipline, hard work, excellence in decision making and implementing decisions are essential if we do want to become a high performance and respected nation,” he said.
Better performance comes from benchmarking with people, organisations and nations that are performing better than us. When the Indian software company started exporting, they realised that benchmark with the global best was the surest way to succeed and to compete in the global best even in our own domestic market. This brought better respect to India abroad and better value to our own customers in the domestic market,” he said.
“We are also the most thin skinned people in the world. We must learn to take criticisms objectively. Therefore, when somebody criticises you or India, do not lose temper. Sit down with him or her. Ask for data and facts and argue rationally. That is the best way to win over your critics. If the other party has better data than you, please accept that argument; learn from them and become a better person,” he said.
KV Ramani, Founder and Chancellor of the SAI University in his address said in the academic year 2025-26 the university would establish four new schools for technology, business, media and artificial intelligence. These schools will join the existing School of Arts and Sciences, School of Law and School of Computer and Data Sciences.
