Sabato De Sarno Steps Down From Gucci
After two years, Sabato De Sarno is leaving Gucci. The designer has been creative director of the Italian fashion house since 2023, succeeding Alessandro Michele. During his tenure, De Sarno steered the brand in a new direction that was decidedly more sleek and minimal. He introduced a signature color called Ancora red, and he also brought a diverse group of ambassadors and famous friends to the brand, including Kendall Jenner, Bad Bunny, Julia Roberts, Mark Ronson, and many more. De Sarno, who formerly worked at Valentino, reintroduced the iconic Jackie bag and put his spin on classic Gucci loafers by turning them into exaggerated platform flats.
In an emotional Instagram post early this morning, De Sarno wrote, “Any important project relies on the passion, the intelligence and heart of extraordinary people. To them I say: always look out for your joy.” He continued, “A thank you would not be enough maybe. But today my joy is for you.”
A successor has not yet been announced, and Gucci’s Fall 2025 collection show will be presented by the in-house studio team.
A reason for this departure was not shared, though De Sarno’s time at Gucci will be remembered for his dedication to his craft, his love for his team and family, and the collaborators that made his moment with Gucci meaningful. De Sarno also believed in the power of clothes to transform and uplift. When profiled in the November 2024 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, De Sarno said, “I don’t want to cover you with my things. We want to see you. I want to see you wearing Gucci, not Gucci wearing you.” He added, “When people choose my clothes, I want them to be able to wear them. Because to me, it’s important to have things that have life.”
There is no doubt he’ll be able to go far in whatever role he winds up in next.
