Who are the top contenders in BJP for CM post?- The Week
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on the way to sweeping the Delhi assembly elections by leading in 47 out of the 70 seats, while Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is ahead in 23. As Union Minister Amit Shah and BJP President J.P. Nadda celebrate the party’s victory at the party headquarters in Delhi, the big question is who will be the next Delhi CM?
Top 5 contenders for Delhi’s next CM
Parvesh Verma
BJP’s Parvesh Verma emerged victorious against AAP supremo and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal by securing 30,088 votes. Kejriwal got 25,999 votes, while Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit secured 4,568 votes.
Parvesh is a two-time MP from West Delhi and is the son of former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma.
Verma attended Delhi Public School in RK Puram and then went to Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College. He also received a master of business administration degree from the Fore School of Management.
Verma was elected to the Delhi assembly in 2013 from Mehrauli constituency. He won the Lok Sabha polls as the BJP candidate from West Delhi seat in 2015.
Vijender Gupta
Gupta won the Rohini seat defeating AAP’s Pardeep Mittal. Gupta won the seat twice in the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections. He has served as Delhi BJP chief.
Virendra Sachdeva
Sachdeva is the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Delhi. He took charge as president on March 23, 2023.
Following the victory, Sachdeva said that the central leadership would decide on the chief ministerial candidate.
Harish Khurana
BJP’s Harish Khurana faced AAP’s Shivcharan Goel in his electoral debut. Khurana won by over 11,000 votes. Son of former Delhi CM Madan Lal Khurana (1993-1996), he holds key positions in BJP’s Delhi unit, having served as secretary, public relations cell convenor, and party spokesperson.
Satish Upadhyay
Upadhyay won by over 2,000 votes by defeating AAP’s Somnath Bharti in the Malviya Nagar constituency. He served as the BJP state president and is the head of Delhi Yuva Morcha, and the vice-chairman of NDMC.
Among other names for the CM’s face include Ashish Sood, who served as the general secretary of Delhi BJP and Jitendra Mahajan, who has close associations with RSS.
