Great Lakes Science Advisory Board to discuss microplastics

The International Joint Commission’s Great Lakes Science Advisory Board is going to talk about microplastics in the water.

It says that the plastic pollution in the Great Lakes is creating ecological, human health and socioeconomic impacts.

“Plastic is a part of modern life and pervasive throughout the Great Lakes ecosystem,” said Rebecca Rooney, Canadian co-chair of the Science Advisory Board’s Research Coordination Committee and an associate professor of biology at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. “Yet, the monitoring and reporting on microplastics is largely project-based. The board offers actionable tools to help the Canadian and US governments take a common and routine approach to monitoring microplastics.”

The Advisory Board has a microplastic report it will discuss on Wednesday, Feb. 12, along with any recommendations to the United States and Canadian governments. The one-hour public webinar will take place at 1 p.m.

“Adopting microplastics as an indicator of ecological health would improve our understanding of their prevalence and environmental impacts,” said Karen Kidd, member of the board’s Science Priority Committee.

The talk is free, but registration is required.
