When Music Moves, it Speaks

Today on Good Morning Northland faculty from UMD’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences joined the show to talk about their upcoming event, When Music Moves, it Speaks. It blends together dance, music and theater.

The faculty of University of Minnesota Duluth’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences joined Good Morning Northland this morning to share details about “When Music Moves, It Speaks,” an upcoming performance that merges live dance, music, and theater into a one-of-a-kind experience.

The event, happening this February, features works by female and BIPOC composers, giving a platform to underrepresented voices in the arts.

“This event started with a conversation,” said Rebecca Katz-Harwood, explaining how students from the music department’s accompanying class and the theater department’s dance composition class collaborated to create a performance that breaks traditional boundaries.

The production also incorporates spoken-word poetry, selected by Lina Yeoman Lee, adding another layer to the experience. “You can see the music, hear the dancing,” said Jennifer Brady, describing how each art form enhances the others in an immersive way.

A key aspect of the event is its focus on highlighting diverse composers. “In classical music, the repertoire has been very Eurocentric,” said Lee. “We are featuring living composers, female composers, and diverse voices to create a more blended and inclusive musical experience.”

Beyond the artistry, the production provides students with a unique interdisciplinary opportunity. “When students work with different disciplines, they learn to collaborate in new ways,” said Katz-Harwood. “It creates a more dynamic experience for students, faculty, and the audience.”

“When Music Moves, It Speaks” will take place at Weber Music Hall on Wednesday, February 26, at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, with a live stream available for those unable to attend in person. More information can be found on the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences website.
