Verstappen in Top 20 highest sports earners, Hamilton not far off
Max Verstappen is ranked P17 of the top-earning sportsmen of 2025 in the annual Forbes Top 50 list, with fellow Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton P21.
According to Forbes, soccer superstar Ronaldo banked a whopping $260-million, with golfer Jon Rahm next up at $ 218 million and Lionel Messi at $135-million.
The top Formula 1-earning driver was four-time F1 World Champion Max Verstappen who banked $76 million from Red Bull and a further $5 million for personal endorsements. His $81-million earned puts him seventeenth on the Forbes list.
Hamilton, who for most of the past decade was F1’s highest earner, banked $69 million of which Mercedes paid him $57-million plus his own deals that amounted to $12-million. He was ranked 21st on the Forbes list.
Middle East money boosts earnings for super athletes
Heading into 2025, 27-year-old Verstappen and 40-year-old Hamilton will earn even more. The Briton, now at Ferrari, and Red Bull’s Dutch ace together earn more than the other 18 drivers on the F1 grid.
Forbes report: “In total, the world’s 50 highest-paid athletes hauled in an estimated $3.88 billion over the last 12 months before taxes and agents’ fees, up 13% from last year’s record mark of $3.44 billion.
“Roughly 76%, or $2.94 billion, came from on-field earnings (salaries, bonuses and prize money) partly because of the Middle Eastern money continuing to flow into sports.
“The other 24%, or $936 million, is attributable to their endorsements, appearances, licensing and memorabilia income, and other business endeavours, which is down 13% year-over-year from $1.08 billion.
Forbes Top 50 Earners in Sport Methodology
Regarding the methodology used to compile the 2024 Top 50 list, Forbes wrote: “The on-field [on track in Verstappen and Hamilton;’s case] earnings figures include prize money, salaries, bonuses and, in some situations pertaining to soccer, club-based image rights agreements.
“In cases where players continue to receive paychecks beyond May 1 for a regular season that is concluded by then—as in the NBA—Forbes assigns the full season of salary. Playoff bonuses are included for the 2023 MLB and NFL seasons and the 2022-23 NBA season.
“Athletes are not credited for salary they forfeit during league-imposed suspensions. For soccer players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have team or league sponsors that subsidize their contracts, value is accounted for using estimates of their playing wages.
According to Forbes, they do not deduct for taxes or agents’ fees. The list includes athletes active at any point during the 12-month time period.
