Scream Fan Favorite Laments Getting Rejected for Christopher Nolan’s Next Film

After forever becoming a horror genre fan favorite with his unforgettable performance as Billy Loomis in Scream, Skeet Ulrich — one of the two OG Ghostface actors in the original film — had the opportunity to join revered filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s next movie. The casting did not work out in the end, leaving Ulrich feeling the sting of Hollywood rejection.

Per Screen Rant, Ulrich addressed his near-casting in Nolan’s next movie, The Odyssey, during a panel at MEGACON Orlando. The actor shared that he made it down to one of three possible choices for an unnamed role in the film, and he had just found out the day before the panel that he’d been passed over. While Ulrich acknowledged that he’s had some “big wins” in his career, he noted that it’s “not easy” to be rejected for projects and having to move on after “falling in love with the material.” Even so, while it never feels good to miss out on desired roles, Ulrich remains grateful that he’s still able to make his living as an actor, knowing not everyone in the business gets to that level.

“It’s not easy at all [having a life full of rejection],” Ulrich said. “I just read for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. It got down to me and two other dudes, and I found out last night it ain’t me. But, yeah, it’s almost a weekly experience of putting yourself out there for things and hoping and falling in love with material, then having to move on. There are big wins, so that makes it palatable, but it’s a lot of rejection.”

Yeah, it’s not an easy life, but you’re doing what you love to do. So, when you get those moments that you get to do it, it makes everything else fall away. I think it’s crucial that you find what you love to do.”

“Don’t hold Hollywood as the standard of success for if you’re a filmmaker, in any regard,” the actor added, “The success is you finding that you love it and doing it in any way you can, whether that’s making movies with your phone, or with your friends or whatever. It’s no different for us. People just put up a lot of money for us to have really cool toys to make those things with, but it’s the same love and the same passion that you have for it. It’s no different than what Matt [Lillard] and I have.”
